British Upholstery is the best in the world… if we do say so ourselves. From frames to finish all of our sofas are lovingly crafted with pride and passion by our dedicated team all in our small workshop in Preston, Lancashire.

You won’t find any imports here. All of our pieces from start to finish are made by-hand in our little workshop.

At James and Rose we are very much a ‘family’, literally in some cases. A small team of dedicated individuals who put lots of pride and passion into everything they do.

From upholsterers who’ve been at the job for 30 years, to youngsters learning the trade, our attention to detail is second to none.

We aren’t a big national retailer, we haven't got huge showrooms, so if you're one of our customers you aren’t just another number. From start to finish we deal with each customer as an individual. From design to delivery, you will be in constant contact with our workshop as we create the sofa of your dreams.

All our pieces are lovingly crafted on site from the ground up in our workshop. From frame all the way to finish everything we make and sell is all done in-house.

Here at James and Rose all our sofas are bespoke, they are made to order and unique to you. This gives you full control and choice when it comes to your sofa. Size, style, colour, leather, fabric… everything is all chosen by you.

Handmade to order

Every piece we create is handmade to order offering unprecedented levels of choice, ensuring our customers receive exactly what they desire. Here at James and Rose we don't mass produce, all our sofas are tailored to your requirments and specifications. Our bespoke sofas are available in hundreds of styles, leathers and fabrics.

We hand build the frames from carefully selected beech timber. Beech is a very durable wood and is ideal for both shaped and straight frame sections due to it’s malleable qualities, Beech is also able to stand constant weight and high impact force. A well made beech frame is able to be recovered many times.

The fully sprung seat back and arms combined with the best quality high resilient upholstery foam offers fantastic comfort. A combination of traditional skills and the best available upholstery components combine to create a stunning piece of workmanship which will last a lifetime.

From start to finish we deal with each customer as an individual. From design to delivery, you will be in constant contact with our workshop as we create the sofa of your dreams.

We will help you through the process every step of the way. We confirm your order with diagrams and production documents and make sure everything is correct before your piece enters production. We will always be on hand to answer any and all questions you may have.

All our sofas are handmade by us in our little workshop in Preston, Lancashire. Every detail from the ground up is made on site, uniquely for each customer. From frames and finish everything is indivudal just for YOU.

Placing your order...

Because all James and Rose sofas are bespoke, made to order, you can't 'check out' online. Ordering from James and Rose is a process, and requires a little bit of conversation.

James and Rose are both the manufacturer and the retailer, because of that we know our stuff. We’ve no middle men, no big fancy showrooms, just loads of knowledge and expertise. You’re buying directly from us, we always look after our customers. We ensure you get exactly what you are looking for.

When designing your dream sofa the easiest thing to do is to give us a call. James and Rose sofas can be simple or a little more complex. It’s always better to have a conversation with us about it. Get to know us and our family run business. We don’t have customer service departments or call centres you will always speak directly to the people making your sofa.

You need to know what you are working with. Don't worry if its not 100% accurate, we can help you get to the right dimensions for your sofa, but we just need an initial idea of your dimensions.

3. Submit your enquiry

We have various ways to make an enquiry on each range we offer. Either complete the enquiry from on the range page, go through all the options, and complete it as fully as you can. Alternatively, give us a call on 01772 702855 and we can go over your details.

4. Samples in the post

Once we confirm what you are looking for we can pop you a selection of beautiful samples in the post.

Once your samples arrive take a look through and see what catches your eye. Don't worry if they aren't quite right the first time, we can always send you a few more.

5. Finalise the details

Modifications to height and depth, type of feet, studded or piped facings?

There are lots of different options to customise your sofa and make it truly yours.

6. Everything comes together

When your ready to place your order. Get in touch by giving us a call or paying us a visit and we can get everything in place.

We have got very good over the years at doing things from a distance and we will make sure everything is perfect before your sofa goes into production.

Once your order is in place, in 7-8 weeks time we'll deliver your gorgeous new bespoke sofa!

5 Top Tips for a Perfect Sofa

What exactly goes into a James and Rose original?

Research suggests we spend around 30 hours a week on our sofas. That’s a lot of time so best make sure you spend it right.

Our 5 top tips will help make sure you find the perfect sofa and tell you a little about what goes into every James and Rose piece.

1. A GOOD SOFA IS BUILT ON SOLID FOUNDATIONS

The starting point for a perfect sofa is always the frame, a good frame should be built to last a lifetime. Many sofas use pine or MDF in their frames, which just isn’t going to the stand up to the test of time. It’s always better to invest in a solid wood frame like the beechwood timber used in James and Rose sofas. Whilst it is the slightly more expensive option, it is much more durable and robust, and won’t warp or buckle in a few years time.

The joinery, the way the frame goes together, is also very important. Corner blocks, dowled, glued and screwed – all form part of a quality join. Our frames are all engineered to ensure they provide a high level of manufacturing quality.

2. IT’S WHAT’S ON THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS

Whats on the inside you perfect sofa can make a real difference. Too soft/too firm its all about finding the right balance. Make sure your selective when it comes to the fillings – some offer less than others when it comes to both comfort and durability. Fibre filled cushions can become flat quickly, overly hard foam can be like sitting on bricks.

The signature filling at James and Rose is our Dual-Core cushions – a high density reflex foam with a feather and down topper. This gives you the squishy softness combined with the foam base, meaning less time plumping and more time to relax for a heck of a lot longer due to their durability. Like every aspect of a James and Rose sofa everything is chosen by you. We have many options when it comes to fillings to find your perfect sit.

When it comes to the springs, a heavily weighted serpentine spring, as we use, is good option. A traditional hand tied coiled spring seat is great, but so is the price tag that goes along with it. You really want to avoid anything that is cheaply made, as this can cause problems with pressure on the frame and the dreaded ‘saggy seat’!

The details matter. Hand tied buttoning, different finishing options, individual metal studs, even a vast range of choice when it comes to feet all add to making the sofa your own.

3. SIZE MATTERS

Getting the sizing of your perfect sofa correct is paramount. You’ve got to make sure its a focal point of your room without it being so big its overpowering, or so small it gets lost. Measure up the space you are working with to make sure its spot on. Planning out the outline of the sofa with tape or newspapers may help.

When it comes to a corner or u-shape sofa, a general rule of thumb bigger is always slightly better. By going bigger you can regain the seating space of the corners.

As a top tip, its always better to err on the side of caution, more so if you are fitting a gap. Much better it fits with space than doesn’t go in. Our GUIDE to help measure your space should help. We will also advise as much as possible when it comes to sizing and we send diagrams of the piece to ensure its correct before going into production.

ALWAYS – check the access – make sure the sofa will fit through any doors and corridors so we can be sure it will get into the room. No one wants to sit on a sofa outside their house.

4. FABRICS AND LEATHERS AND COLOURS… OH MY.

So, you know your dimensions, got a idea of the style, now for the hard bit, the fabric or leather your perfect sofa is covered in.

Not all fabrics are made equal, some just aren’t up to the task. When it comes to choosing the right fabric you have to consider the use. Is this a decorative piece, that will see only occasional use. Or is this a family sofa were everyone will gather for Netflix and chill. Whatever it may be we can always advise on the best fabric for the job.

Fabrics use something called the Martindale test to check there suitability, most of our fabrics score 35,000 and higher. When you are placing an order we will always enquire to its use and make sure we recommend fabrics accordingly.

Again, they are hundreds of different leathers out there. We only use quality UK sourced hides. Something modern with an even colour choose a pigmented hide. Something more rustic and traditional, an aniline is for you. You can learn more about different types of leather here.

When it comes to colour, do you want your sofa to be bold and stand out or to sit perfectly within your decor? We offer all the colours of the rainbow, just make sure its right for you. Ordering a sofa from James and Rose is a little different. We aren't like all the other high street retailers and every piece we make is unique. No sales people or anyone in the middle, your are ordering directly from the workshop and the people making your sofa.

Q: What exactly can you make?

A: All the designs you see on of our website can be made to pretty much any dimension and in any suitable covering. A lot of our models can also be made as a corner sofa or sofa bed. All of our ranges can be tailored to you as an individual, and because our furniture is all made one-of-a-kind, rather than mass produced on a production line, can be adapted to your every need and want.

Q: What materials do you use?

A: At James and Rose our furniture is made to last, using only the highest quality materials available to give the finest level of style and comfort. To learn more about what goes into our sofas click here.

All of our frames are made from 100% Beech wood, the seats and backs are fully sprung and then layers of wadding and high resilience foam are applied to give maximum comfort.

Then your choice of one of our many full grain leathers or high quality upholstery fabrics are expertly fitted using the best techniques and years of providing quality craftsmanship.

And of course, all the materials comply to current British regulations with regard to health and safety, and fire safety standards.

Q: How long does the process take, and how do I pay?

A: The usual lead time from confirmation of an order is around 8 weeks. Should you require a more urgent delivery for any reason, please do ask, as we can often accommodate a quicker lead time to meet your requirements.

As far as payment goes we accept wide range of payment options to suit your needs. A deposit of 1/3 is paid up front, and then the remaining balance upon delivery. We accept Cash, Credit Cards, Cheques, PayPal and bank transfers. Other arrangements can be made if you require, please contact us to discuss your needs.

The needs of our customers are of the upmost importance to us at James and Rose. A quick read through our ‘reviews’ is evidence that not only our furniture is of the highest standard, but we provide a service to match every step of the way. At James and Rose will always give you an accurate and honest delivery date that we WILL uphold!

Q: How do you deliver, what’s the cost?

A: The majority of our mainland UK deliveries are FREE, and carried out by our own drivers. We send two men to each delivery, who will be happily set up your furniture and make sure everything is okay. The will also take away any an all packaging. Learn more about our deliveries here.

Q: How do I choose my fabric or leather?

A: We have literally hundreds of fabrics and leathers to choose from. We have supply deals in place with most of the countries top fabric houses.

To choose a fabric or leather all you need to do is get in touch. Using our Fabric and Leathers page, you can let us know exactly what fabric you would like, and we can get FREE samples out to you in the post which you can view in your home.

Once you’ve chosen your fabric or leather, get in touch and we can advise you on how we would proceed.

Q: Where can I see, sit on, your sofas?

A: James and Rose are a small workshop. We don’t have any big showrooms or shop fronts. Having said that our door is always open to any customers.

We are quite happy for any of our potential customers to come and see our workshop and operation.

We have a professional workshop and showroom, in which customers can view many of the current pieces being made. We can show you every stage of the process and let you view all the finest quality materials that we use.

This also gives you, the customer, the chance to ask any questions or concerns you may have about the process, and further discuss and refine your design ideas.

Our workshop is located within very easy access to the M6 motorway and we have had many potential clients like yourself visit us. People have visited from all over the country

and by just seeing the quality in our build process and furniture have gone on to become happy with there own James and Rose bespoke sofa.

Q: Is your furniture expensive?

A: James and Rose make handmade bespoke upholstery to the highest of standards. So you may well think it would be very expensive?

But… we supply our customers direct from our workshop, therefore we have no salesmen to pay a commission and no expensive high street stores to fund. So we believe a like-for-like purchase on the high street, if you could find furniture of this choice and quality, would be at least double the cost. And you would not have the advantage of talking direct to the people making your furniture and, little or no control or involvement in the process.

Although our individual prices are on the website, we do provide discounts on multiple orders so please contact us today on 01772 702855, and you may be surprised how little a quality handmade sofa from James and Rose could cost.

Q: What if I am unhappy with my sofa?

A: In the unlikely event that you should be anything but 100% happy with your James and Rose furniture upon delivery, we will refund you your deposit and take the furniture away.

Placing Your Order

When it comes to placing the order we send you an invoice confirming the costing amount, and requesting the deposit. We would ask 50% as a deposit with the reminder of the balance payable when we deliver. The deposit can be paid by giving us a call with a credit or debit card, or by bank transfer to the account details on the invoice.

We also send a final production document confirming what we are making for you, it will have the dimensions and specifications on it as well as a final diagram of the sofa. We just ask you to confirm the document to make sure it is correct before it goes into production.

In terms of lead time from the point you place your order to delivery we are looking at around 8 weeks currently, but the order can be placed and delivered at a time specified by you beyond this time.

Paying for Your Order

Pay a 50% of the balance as a deposit, this allows us to get your piece into production. The deposit can be paid by Credit/Debit Card over the phone or in person, or by bank transfer to the account details on our invoice.

Then the remaining balance is payable when we deliver. Our delivery drivers will arrive, set the sofa up in your house, let you have a sit, a feel, a touch and we are so sure of the quality of our sofas then you can pay the remaining balance

You can pay by cash on delivery, with a credit or debit card or by bank transfer before our delivery team arrives with you.

How to Measure Your Space

Size matters.. when it comes to a sofa anyway. Getting the size of your sofa right is key and the guides below will help you out when it comes to making it spot on.

All of our sofas are bespoke, made to order, uniquely for you. This means they can be pretty much any size. We can also adjust heights and depths of your sofas should you wish. Below you will find some diagrams to assist you with measuring your space. This will help you to make the best use of the space you have available and guide you to getting the right sofa for you.

Standard Sofa

1 . Measure A to B

2. Check Depth and Height

Our standard sofa are quite simple, the dimension we require is usually the left to right dimension of your sofa. The majority of our models are set at certain sizes, but if you let us know we can always tell you the closest size.

Also make sure the depth of your sofa is correct. You can see the sofa depth on each page, but we can adjust that if needs be, either making it deeper or shallower depending on what you need. The height is adjustable also.

L-Shape
1. Are you looking for a left hand or Right Hand Corner Sofa?

Right-Hand Corner - Measure B to C

3. Check Depth and Height

For a corner sofa we usually require two dimensions, how long across the back, and how long on the side. The side measurement includes the depth of the back piece, so the measurements we need are the total outside of the sofa.

Again, check the depth of your sofa, as well as the height against our standard dimensions.

U-Shape

1. Measure A to B

4. Check Depth and Height

For a U-Shape, you apply the same rules as the L-Shape, but you are measuring to add a piece on either side. Again, the lengths of the sides includes the depth of the back section, so the outer most dimensions.
Check your depth and height to make sure they are correct.

One thing to keep in mind with a U-Shape is we would suggest a back section of at least 305cm. Anything smaller and the central gap which is left becomes very small.
